The Prohibition also know as the 18th amendment, was a law stopping the consumption and imports of alcohol in the United States. Due to the reckless behavior of intoxicated Americans, prohibition was created to decrease the number of drinkers in America by killing the problem at the source. The government proceeded to get rid of businesses that manufactured, distributed, and sold alcoholic drinks. One of the biggest supporters of this act was was the Anti Saloon league. They felt that it was wrong for people to consume alcohol, let alone have it in their country. The Anti Saloon League helped pass the Webb-Kenyon Act, which was designed to stop the transportation of alcohol into Wet-States so that they could become Dry-States. People did not take this very lightly. One main effect of prohibition was organized crime. Due to the high demand of alcohol, even after prohibition was in act, people began to either smuggle it in from different countries or create their own. This lead to the rise bootleggers, people that distributed/sold alcohol. Bootleggers were often apart of the mafia, like Al Capone, one of biggest bootleggers. Bootleggers needed a place to sell all of the illegal alcohol. This lead to the rise of speakeasies, or secretive bars. These places were disguised as drug stores or supermarkets, and in order to get into the bar you had to know the secret password or be apart of a group. All in all prohibition had its ups and downs, but it ended up with the act fading out and the buying of alcohol becoming legal again.
